Giving Instruction/Command (Contoh Ungkapan dan Dialog Ungkapan Perintah

Hello, eighth graders. How’s everything? Nice to see you again. This time, we are going to learn about giving instruction (KD d 3.4 & 4.4.; IPK 3.4.1 & 4.4..1)

Pernahkah kalian menyuruh seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu? Apa yang kamu ucapkan saat menyuruh orang lain? Tentu saat menyuruh orang lain kita harus melihat siapa yang kan kita suruh.

Jika kita menyuruh orang lain yang sudah kita kenal dengan baik kita dapat menggunakan kalimat perintah secara langsung, misalnya menyuruh adik untuk mengambilkan minum, kita bisa mengatakannya, “Ambilkan minum di dapur.” Namun, jika kita menyuruh orang yang belum begitu kenal atau orang yang lebih kita hormati, maka kita sebaiknyanya menggunakan kalimat perintah secara halus dengan menambahkan kata mohon. Nah, bagaimana ya kita ingin memerintah seseorang melakukan sesuatu dalam bahasa Inggris? Let’s check it out.

When you want to give an instruction to someone you know very well, you can command directly by using imperative sentences as follow.

Example 1

  1. Study hard.
  2. Stop.
  3. Open the door.
  4. Listen to me.

Contoh kalimat langsung di atas dapat digunakan untuk memerintah seseorang yang sudah akrab (sesama teman) atau orang yang lebih rendah jabatannya/statusnya/usinaya (misalnya, seorang manajer kepada sekretarisnya, orang tua kepada anaknya, guru terhadap muridnya).

Jika dilihat dari struktur kalimatnya, kalimat perintah di atas terdiri dari kata kerja dalam bentuk pertama atau sekarang (Verb 1) (misalnya study, stop, open, listen) dan boleh diikuti obyek (object) (misalnya the door, me) dan kata keterangan (adverb) misalnya now. Dengan demikian, pola kalimat pertama yang dapat digunakan untuk memerintah adalah

Imperative sentence structure

Verb 1 + (object) + (adverb).

You need to know that in English giving instruction does not end with an exclamation mark instead of a full stop.

Sekarang coba kalian amati contoh kalimat perintah berikut.

Example 2

  1. Be quiet. (Harap tenang)
  2. Be serious. (Harap serius)
  3. Be bere. (Harap di sini.)
  4. Be a good student. (Jadilah siswa yang baik)

Jika kalian perhatikan, apakah kalian menemukan perbedaan antara contoh kalimat perintah pada exmple 1 dan example 2?

Jika diperhatikan, kalimat perintah pada exmpple 1 memiliki kata kerja (verb) sedangkan example 2 tidak terdapat kata kerja. Perhatikan kata setelah be, yaitu quite dan serious. Apakah dua kata ini termasuk kata kerja? Bukan, kedua kata tersebut termasuk kata sifat (adjective). Sedangkan here adalah kata keterangan tempat (adverb). Sedangkan a good student adalah kata benda (noun). Lalu, apa yang bisa kalian simpulkan?

Tepat sekali jika jawaban kalian adalah kalimat perintah yang tidak memiliki kata kerja maka kalimat perintah harus diawali dengan Be kemudian diikuti kata sifat (adjective) dan/ kata keterangan (adverb) dan kata benda (noun).

Untuk memberikan perintah yang lebih halus, kalian bisa menggunakan kata please yang bisa diartikan ‘tolong’ dalam bahasa Indoensia. Pay attentiom to the following example.

  • Please, turn off the lamp.
  • Turn off the lamp, please.

Task 2. Listen to the dialogue in the following video to answer the questions below.

  4. What would happen to the man in a white t-shirt if he didn’t follow the instructions?

Task 3. Listen again to the dialogue in the video of task 2 to identify the expressions used to give instructions.

Task 5. Write down all instructions in the dialogue.

Task 6. Arrange the following jumbled sentences into a good dialogue.

  3. Bara: Alright, Mom. I will keep the distance at least 1.5m. Is that all, Mom?
  4. Bara: Okay Mom, I will do that.
  5. Bara: Mom, may I go to a bookshop?
  6. Mom: Wear a facemask.
  7. Mom: That’s alright but you must remember the health protocols.
  8. Mom: No. Please, wash your hands using soap correctly.
  9. Mother: Keep physical distancing. Avoid crowds.

Task 7. Write instructions based on the pictures below.

Task 8. Make a dialogue based on the situation below and act it out with a friend.

Situation: You see that your friend does not wash his/her hands correctly. Then you give some instructions to her so your friend wash his/her hands correctly
