Narrative Text: Fairy Tales (Fungsi sosial, Struktur Teks, Unsur Kebahasaan Teks Narrative)

Hello, ninth graders? Howdy? I hope everyone is great.Sebelum kita mulai pelajaran, coba kalian amati gambar di atas? Menurut kalian, apa judul cerita di atas? Ya, cerita di atas berjudul Bawang Putih Bawang Merah. Apakah kalian pernah membaca ceritanya? Kalau sudah pernah membaca, bagaimana ceritanya menurutmu? Apakah kamu suka membacanya? Apa yang kamu dapatkan setelah membaca cerita tersebut?

Task 1. Watch the following video and then make a mind map of the social function, generic structure, narrative text types and examples, and language features.

A. Social Function

Berdasarkan data yang dirilis oleh UNESCO (2020) minat baca orang Indonesia sebesar 0,001%. Artinya, dari 1000 orang hanya ada 1 orang yang benar-benar suka membaca. Sedangkan berdasarkan hasil riset yang dilakukan Central Connecticut State University, minat baca Indonesia berada pada ranking 60 dari 61 negara yang disurvey. Memprihatinkan sekali, bukan? Tak heran jika negara Indonesia makin tertinggal dengan negara lain, bahkan di Asia tenggara yang konon Indonesia menjadi negara paling maju se Asia Tenggara, kini menjadi negara yang makin tertinggal.Padahal, dengan membaca banyak sekali manfaat yang bisa diperoleh. Walaupun membaca cerita yang tampaknya ringan tetapi sebenarnya banyak manfaat yang dapat diperoleh, minimal mendapatkan dua manfaat utama dari membaca cerita, yaitu:

  1. Mendapatkan hiburan (Getting entertainment)
  2. Mendapatkan pesan atau nilai moral atau pelajaran/ hikmah (moral value/ lesson) yang terkandung dalam cerita

Dalam sastra bahasa Inggris, cerita seperti Bawang Merah dan Bawang Putih termasuk fairy tales atau kisah fantasi. Ciri khas dari kisah fantasi atau fairy tale adalah adanya unsur magis atau keajaiban yang hanya terjadi dalam dunia cerita dan mustahil terjadi dalam dunia nyata. Fairy tales termasuk dalam teks narrative.

The social function of a narrative text is to entertain or amuse the readers.

B. Types of Narrative Texts

Fairy tales belong to narrative texts. Narrative texts consist of several types, as follows. Teks narrative terdiri dari beberapa jenis, yaitu:

  1. Legend: A legend is a semi-true story which has passed on from one person to person. It has meaning or symbolism for the culture in which it originates. Dalam bahasa Indonesia, legend dikenal sebagai legenda yaitu cerita tentang asal usul kejadian sesuatu, misalnya legenda Tangkuban Parahu.
  2. Myth: A myth is a story based on tradition or legend which has a deep symbolic. Dalam bahasa Indonesia, Myth disebut mitos, yaitu cerita rakyat tentang makhluk mitologis atau kekuatan supranatural, misalnya cerita Nyai Roro Kidul.
  3. Folktale: A folktale is a popular story that was passed on in spoken form, from generation to the next and usually the author is unknown. Folktale dalam bahasa Indonesia disebut cerita rakyat dan cerita ini biasanya bersifat turun temurun dari mulut ke mulut sehingga satu cerita biasanya memiliki beberapa versi yang berbeda, misalnya
  4. Folklore: A folklore is a tale, legend, and supertition of a particular ethnic population. Folklore juga merupakan cerita rakyat, tetapi bedanya kalau folklore tidak turun menurun secara lisan.
  5. Fable: A fable is a story that features animals, plants or forces of nature which are anthropomorphised (given human qualities). Fabel adalah cerita tentang hewan, tumbuhan atau kekuatan alam yang menyerupai perilaku manusia.

C. Generic Structure

The generic structure of a narrative text consists of five parts. What are they?

  1. Orienttation: This part introduces the main character and when and where the story happened. Bagian ini berisi pengenalan tokoh utamanya serta kapan dan di mana ceritanya terjadi.
  2. Complication: This part shows that the main character got a problem. Pada bagian ini, tokoh utama mendapatkan masalah.
  3. Resolution ; This part tells that the main character found the solution to solve the problem. Pada bagian ini, tokoh utama menemukan solusi atau jalan keluar untuk mengatasi masalahnya.
  4. Reorientation: This part tells about the result of the solution. If the solution worked well so the result was better, the story ended happily. On the contrary, if the solution did not work well the result would be worse and the the story ended sadly. Bagian ini menceritakan bagaimana hasil dari penyelesaian masalah. Jika masalahnya dapat diselesaikan dengan baik maka akhir cerita berakhir dengan bahagia (happy ending). Sebaliknya jika tokoh utama tidak bisa menyelesaikan masalahnya dengan baik, maka akhir ceritanya akan menyedihkan (sad ending).
  5. Coda: Coda is an optional part of a narrative text. It tells about the lesson or moral.value of the story. Coda adalah salah satu struktur yang terletak di bagian akhir atau penutup dan terdapat pelajaran yang bersifat opsional

D. Language Features

The language features of a narrative text are;

  • Use Noun (Kata Benda)
  • Use Past Tense (Kata Kerja Lampau),
  • Use Time Connective, for examples, After, After That, Before
  • Action Verbs to show the actions, for examples wrote, ran, drank.
  • Saying and Thinking Verb, for examples: Said, Told, and Thought.

Task 2. Look at the picture to answer the questions.

  1. What is the story’s title in the picture?
  2. Have you ever read the story?
  3. What is the story about?
  4. What do you think about the story?

Task 3. Watch the following video to answer the questions below.

  1. What is the title of the story?
  2. What is the writer’s intention to write the text?
  3. What is the story about?
  4. Where did the nother duck lay her eggs?
  5. Why did the mother duck think that/ the last egg would give her the most beautiful duckling?
  6. Why did the ugly duckling leave his family?

Task 4. Watch again the video to answer the questions.

  1. Who were the characters in the story?
  2. When and where did the story happen?
  3. What problem did the main character get?
  4. How did he solve his problem?
  5. How was the result of the solution?
  6. Did you think that the story is a narrative text? Give the reason.

Task 5. Watch again the video to answer the questions.

  1. What is the moral value of the story?
  2. Do you think that this story is good? Give your reason.
  3. If you were the ugly duckling, would you leave your family? Give the reason.
  4. After reading the story, what will you probably do?
