You have learnt about introducing yourself. Sekarang, kalian akan belajar bagaimana saling berkenalan yang melibatkan dua orang.
Adik-adik, pernahkan kalian duduk menunggu di suatu tempat (misalnya saat menunggu antrean di bank) dan di samping tempat duduk kalian ada seseorang yang belum kalian kenal? Apa yang kalian lakukan? Sebagian besar dari kalian pasti saling berkenalan, bukan, walaupun mungkin hanya perkenalan singkat sekedar menanyakan nama dan asal. Namun sebagian orang mungkin saling diam tidak bertegur sapa atau berkenalan padahal sebenarnya manfaat berkenalan itu banyak banget, loh, ya.
Social Function
Sebaiknya saat kalian bertemu dengan orang baru untuk saling berkenalan. Dengan berkenalan kalian akan bertambah teman/relasi, wawasan baru bahkan mungkin inspirasi. So, mulai sekarang bagi kalian yang tidak suka berkenalan dengan orang baru sebaiknya memulai kebiasaan baru, ya, yaitu berkenalan. Jangan malas berkenalan dengan orang yang belum kamu kenal, tentunya untuk saling berbagi hal positif. Yeah, let’s learn to how to establish an acquaintance in English.
The social function of introducing each other is to give an opportunity to know one another and to establish an acquaintance.
Task 1. Look at the following picture to rewrite the dialogue in the correct order.
Task 2. Read again the dialogue above to answer the questions below.
- What are the boy and girl talking about?
- Do you think that they have known each other? Give your reason.
- Who studies at SMP Sukamaju?
- Who lives in Yogyakarta?
- What does probably the boy get after introducing himself to the girl?

Okay, dears. Let’s continue our discussion about how to introduce each other. Dari latihan 1 hingga 4, apa yang bisa kalian pelajari? Ya, ada beberapa ungkapan yang digunakan saat berkenalan, meliputi ungkapan yang digunakan untuk membuka percakapan (opening conversation), ungkapan berkenalan (introducing) dan mengakhiri percakapan (closing conversation).

Task 3. Listen to the dialogue in the video to answer the questions below.
- Who are speaking?
- What are they talking about?
- What information does the boy ask to the girl?
- What information does the girl ask to the boy?
- What does probably happen to the boy and girl after the conversation?
Task 4. Listen again to the dialogue in the video to identify the expressions used to ask and answer questions about name, country and job.
How to Introduce Yourself?
Selanjutnya bagaimana caranya berkenalan? Sebenarnya cukup sederhana loh ya untuk berkenalan. Langkah pertama cukup kalian membuka (opening) percakapan demgan menyapa terlebih dahulu. Langkah berikutnya adalah memperkenalkan diri (introducing yourself) dengan menanyakan nama, alamat, pekerjaan, kegemaran, keluarga, dsb. Lalu langkah teakhir adalah mengakhiri (closing) percakapan dengan berpamitan.
Opening
Coba kalian perhatikan dialog pada task 1 dan task 4, ungkapan apa yang digunakan untuk membuka percakapan? Pada percakapan task 1 lak-laki tersebut mengucapkan kata hello. Sedangkak pada dialog task 4 bisa kita dengar bahwa laki-laki tersebut mengucapkan excuse me. Dengan demikian kesimpulannya adalah saat memulai perkenalan kita bisa menggunakan berbagai macam ungkapan salam atau greeting. Kalian masih ingat materi greeting, bukan? Saya harap demikian namun jika kalian lupa, sila kalian pelajari kembali materi greeting dengan klik di sini. Namun yang perlu kalian catat adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk menanyakan kabar baik saat berkenalan adalah How do you do? (Apa kabar?) dan dijawab menggunakan ungkapan yang sama, yaitu How do you do?
How to open an introduction? You can greet the person you want to get to know by saying some expressions of greeting such as hello, good morning, how do you do, etc.
Introducing Yourself
Setelah menyapa, langkah berikutnya saat berkenalan adalah memperkenalkan diri (introducing yourself) dengan menanyakan nama (name), asal kota (city) atau negara (country), alamat (address), pekerjaan (profession), sekolah (study), kegemaran (hobby/favorite), keluarga (family), dsb.
Sepertinya akan cukup panjang pembahasan kali ini, ya, adik-adik. Take a deep breath first and let’s keep on fire to learn.
What’s your name?
Untuk menanyakan nama (ask about name) kalian bisa menggunakan ungkapan seperti What is your name? dan kalian bisa menjawab dengan mengatakan My name is Andini dan ungkapan lain untuk mengatakan nama seperti yang sudah kalian pelajari pada materi sebelumnya di sini.
Where are you from?
Saat berkenalan kalian boleh menanyakan alamat tempat tinggal atau asal. Jika kalian berkenalan dengan orang asing seperti saat berkenalan dengan turis mancanegara kalian bisa menanyakan asal negara. Kalian bisa menggunakan ungkapan berikut untuk menanyakan asal negara (country) atau alamat tempat tinggal (address).
What is Your Job?
Saat berkenalan kalian boleh menanyakan pekerjaan. Namun kalian tidak boleh menanyakan berapa besar gaji yang diperoleh karena pertanyaan ini dianggap tidak sopan. Here are expressions that you can use to ask a question about job or profession and how to respond it.
Who do you live with?
Ketika berkenalan kalian juga diperbolehkan menanyakan tentang keluarga, yaitu ada berapa orang di rumah, dengan siapa saja tinggal di rumah, apakah memiliki saudara kandung, dsb. Namun demikian, kalian tidak boleh menanyakan apakah punya anak atau menanyakan anaknya berapa walapun dalam konteks budaya di Indonesia menanyakan anak tidak masalah tetapi dalam konteks budaya barat menanyakan anak merupakan pertanyaan yang tidak etis.
What is your date of birth?
Saat berkenalan, kalian diperbolehkan menanyakan tanggal lahir (date of birth) maupun nomor telepon (phone number). Tetapi kalian tidak boleh menanyakan usia karena pertanyaan tersebut tidak etis dalam budaya barat.
Where do you study?
Saat berkenalan kalian sangat diperbolehkan menanyakan tentang sekolah. Kalian bisa menggunakan pertanyaan berikut, ya.
What’s your hobby?
Kalain juga bisa menanyakan kegemaran (hooby) atau kesukaan (favourite) saat berkenalan. Kalian bisa menggunakan ungkapan berikut untuk menanyakan hobi.
You can use the following expressions to ask questions about hobby or favourite.
- What is your hobby?
- What are your hobbies?
- What do you like to do?
- What is your favourite …?
- What are you good at…/interested in…?
Untuk menjawab pertanyaan tentang hobi bisa kalian baca kembali materinya di sini.
Closing
Setelah merasa cukup berkenalan, apa yang seharusnya kalian lakukan? Apakah kalian boleh langsung pergi? Bagaimana seandainya itu terjadi? Tentu akan menimbulkan perasaan tidak enak bukan? So, what must you do before you leave that person? Kalian harus mengakhiri percakapan dengan menggunakan berbagai ungkapan berpamitan (leave taking) seperti Sorry I must go now, Nice to meet you, Good bye, dsb. Untuk mengingat kembali ungkapan leave taking silakan klik di sini.
