Hello, seventh graders. How are you? I hope everyone is great.

This time, we are going to learn about time. Kali ini kita akan belajar tentang menerima dan memberi informasi terkait waktu. Are you nready?

In daily life, we often ask about or give information about time. Bisakan kalian menceritakan pengalaman meminta atau memberikan informasi terkait waktu?

Dalam keseharian, saya yakin kalian pernah menanyakan atau memberikan informasi terkait jam. Apakah kalian tahu bagaimana memberikan informasi atau bertanya tentang jam? Nah, kali ini kita akan belajar bersama sama tentang bagaimana caranya bertanya tentang jam maupun bagaimana memberikan informasi terkait jam. Let’s check it out now.

A. Asking for  time

To ask information about time, you can say the following. Untuk menanyakan waktu, kalian bisa menggunakan ungkapan berikut.

1. What time is it? (Jam berapa ini?)

2. What is the time? (Jam berapa?)

3. What time does the bus arrive? (Jam berapa bis datang?)

You can use more polite expression for some situations. Jika ingin menanyakan waktu kepada orang yang belum kenal atau orang yang lebih tua atau dihormati, kalian bisa mennggunakan ungkapan yang lebih sopan atau halus seperti berikut.

1. Can you tell me the time, please.

2. Could you tell me the time, please.

3. Will you tell me the time, please.

4. Would you tell me the time, please.

5. Would you mind telling the time, please.

Bagaimana, sudah jelas ya tentang ungkapan untuk menanyakan waktu. Sekarang kita akan mencoba untuk belajar bagaimana menanyakan waktu dalam berbagai situasi.  Berikut beberapa contoh  pertanyaan lain yang bisa kalian gunakan untuk menanyakan waktu menggunakan kata tanya when yang berarti kapan.

1. When does the seminar begin? (Kapan seminarnya mulai?)

2. When do you go to school? (Kapan kamu berangkat ke sekolah?)

Now, let’s learn about giving information about time. Sekarang kita belajar bagaimana memberikan informasi tentang jam, ya.

B. Giving the Time

There are two common ways to tell time. Ada dua cara untuk memberikan informasi terkait jam. Kita simak, yuk.

Pertama adalah memberitahukan  jam tanpa menit. How  do you say it in English? Let’s check it out.

1. Telling the hour without minutes

Kalian bisa menggunakan  o’clock ketika memberikan informasi tentang jam tanpa menit seperti kalimat berikut.

a. 01.00 = It’s one o’clock. (Sekarang jam 1).

b. 09.00 = It’s nine o’clok (Sekarang jam 9)

c. 11.00 = It’s eleven o’clock. (Sekarang pukul 11).

Ps.

Terkadang jam di atas ditulis dengan angka, seperti berikut.

09.00 = It’s 9 o’clock.

Sekarang kita lanjut memberikan informasi jam dengan menit, ya.

2. Telling the time with minutes

There are two common ways to give the time with minutes. Ada dua cara untuk memberitahukan jam dengan menit, yaitu menggunakan kata “lebih” atau “past” dan kata “kurang” atau “to”.

Pada umumnya, orang menggunakan kata lebih atau past jika suatu jam lebih 1 hingga 30 menit. Sedangkan jika suatu jam lebih 30 hingga 59 menit, orang menggunakan kata kurang atau to. Sekarang kalian  simak penjelasan berikut ya.

Ada dua cara untuk menyebutkan jam dan menit.

Pertama, sebutkan jam dulu, baru diikuti menit. Kedua, sebutkan menit dulu, baru diikuti past atau to dan menit.

a. Telling the hour first and then the minutes (Hour + minutes)

Cara pertama untuk  menyebutkan jam dengan menit adalah dengan menyebutkan jam terlebih dahulu, baru diikuti dengan menit (jam + menit). Perhatikan contoh berikut.

1) 07.10 = It’s seven ten.(Sekarang jam tujuh sepuluh)

2) 10.25 = It’s ten twenty-five (Sekarang jam sepuluh dua lima)

3) 12 08 = It’s twelve 0-eight (0 dibaca seperti huruf o) (Sekarang jam duabelas delapan menit)

b. Telling the minutes first and then the hour (minutes + past/to + hour)

Cara kedua untuk menyebutkan jam dengan menit adalah dengan menyebutkan menit terlebih dahulu, baru diikuti dengan past/ to dan diikuti dengan jam (menit + past/to + jam). Past artinya lebih dan to artinya kurang. Perhatikan contoh berikut.

1) 05.22 = It’s twenty two past five. (Sekarang jam lima lebih 22 menit)

2) 02.55 = It’s five  to three (Sekarang jam 3 kurang 5 menit)

Note

Dalam bahasa Indonesia, orang biasa menggunakan kata seperempat ketika menyebutkan jam lebih atau kurang 15 menit. Dalam bahasa inggris, seperempat adalah quarter. Sedangkan jika jam lebih atau kurang 30 menit, orang Indonesia bisa menyebutnya dengan kata setengah. Dalam bahasa Inggris, setengah adalah half. Sekarang pertanyaannya adalah bagaiman menggunakan kata kurang quarter atau past dalam bahasa Inggris. Kita simak, yuk.

Penggunaan quarter atau half adalah sama dengan cara kedua untuk jam dan menit, yaitu quarter/half lalu diikuti past/to, kemudian diikuti jam (quarter/half + past/to + hour). Perhatikan contoh berikut.

1) 04.15 = It’s quarter past four (Sekarang pukul empat lebih seperempat).

2) 04.45 = It’s quarter to five (Sekarang pukul lima kurang seperempat).

3) 04.30 = It’s half past four (Sekarang pukul empat setengah).

4) 04.30 = It’s half to five (Sekarang pukul setengah lima

Bagaimana, sekarang sudah jauh lebih paham ya tentang bagiamana mengatakan waktu dalam jam? Sebelum kalian latihan soal, perlu kalian ketahui penggunaan am dan pm yang akan dijelaskan sebagai berikut.

AM vs PM

In English, time does not use the 24 hours. Dalam bahasa Inggris, jam tidak menggunakan waktu dalam bentuk 24 jam seperti halnya di Indonesia. Pada pukul 12 dinihari hingga 12 siang, dalam bahasa Indonesia ditulis pukul 00.00 s.d. 12.00. Sedangkan pukul 12 siang hingga 12 malam, dalam bahasa Indonesia ditulis pukul 12.00 s.d. 24.00. Bagaimana konsep waktu tersebiut dalam bahasa Inggris?

Dalam bahasa Inggris, pada pukul 12 dinihari hingga 12 siang ditulis pukul 00.00 s.d. 12.00 a.m (AM). Sedangkan pukul 12 siang hingga 12 malam, dalam bahasa Inggris ditulis pukul 12.00 s.d. 12.00. p.m. (PM).

00.00 s.d. 11.59 = 12.00 to 11.59 a.m.

12.00 s.d. 23.59 = 12.00 to 11.59 p.m.

13.00 WIB/WITA/WIT = 01.00 pm (One o’clock in the afternoon)

01.00 WIB/WITA/WIT = 01.00 am (One o’clock in the morning)

Ups, hampir lupa. Kalian perlu tahu ya jika dalam bahasa Inggris untuk jam 12 siang biasa disebut midday atau noon (tengah hari), sedangkan jam 12 malam disebut midnight (tengah malam)

Dalam bahasa Inggris, untuk memberitahukan informasi waktu yang sudah spesifik umumnya menggunakan kata at. Berikut adalah contoh penggunaan at dalam waktu.

  • The class begins at 7 o’clock.
  • She will go to work at 6.30 am.

Nah, sekarang tiba saatnya kalian latihan agar lebih paham bagaimana meminta dan memberikan informasi terkait jam.

Task 1. Pay attention to the following picture and answer the questions.

  1. What picture is it?
  2. What is it for?
  3. What time does the clock show?
  4. What do you know about telling the time and asking for the time in English?

Task 2. Say the time below in AM or PM.

Example:

14.00 = 02.00 PM

  1. 03.00 = …………………….
  2. 15.30 = …………………….
  3. 09.39 = …………………….
  4. 00.00 = …………………….
  5. 12.00 = …………………….

Task 3. Say the time in hour and minutes.

Example:

11.12 = It’s eleven twelve.

  1. 05.55 = …………………………………………………..
  2. 12.05 = …………………………………………………..
  3. 01.36 = …………………………………………………..
  4. 07.18 = …………………………………………………..
  5. 03.25 = …………………………………………………..

Task 4. Say the time in minutes and hour.

Example:

11.12 = It’s twelve past eleven.

11.49 = It’s eleven to twelve.

Task 5. Say the time in quarter/ half and hour.

Example

11.45 = It’s quarter to twelve

  1. 05.45 = …………………………………………………..
  2. 12.15 = …………………………………………………..
  3. 01.30 = …………………………………………………..
  4. 07.30 = …………………………………………………..

Task 6. Listen to the video and answer the questions.

  1. What is the dialogue about?
  2. What time does the dialogue happen?
  3. Why is the woman in a hurry?
  4. When does the meeting begin?
  5. What time will the man remind the woman?

Task 7. Complete the following dialogue based on the picture.

Dialogue 1. 

Alice : What time is it now?

Danny: ………………………………………….

Alice : Oh my God. I’m going to be late for my English course.

Danny: ……………. does the course begin?

Alice :  ……..  quarter past five.

Danny: Hurry up. You must go now. 

Alice : Okay. Please, pick me up at 7 ……….

Danny: Sure. 

Task 8. Read the following invitation and answer the questions.

  1. What is the invitation about?
  2. What is the purpose of the text?
  3. What time is the party held?
  4. What should the readers do to be on time to arrive at the party?

Task 9. Read the schedule and answer the questions. 

  1. What is the schedule about?
  2. What is the writer’s intention in writing the text?
  3. Where do people likely find this schedule?
  4. What time do students arrive at school?
  5. What time do students leave school?

Task 10. Write a dialogue about asking for and giving time with your friend and practice it.
