Expressions of Prohibition (Contoh Ungkapan dan Dialog Ungkapan Larangan)

Hello, eighth graders. Nice to meet you again. Today you are going to learn about expressions of prohibition. Hari ini kalian akan belajar tentang Kd 3.3. & 4.3 subunit 2 yaitu ungkapan larangan (prohibition).

Social Function

Pernahkah kalian dilarang melakukan sesuatu oleh orang tua? Atau pernahkan kalian melarang temanmu untuk melakukan sesuatu? Pasti sudah pernah mengalami keduanya, bukan? Coba, diingat-ingat sebentar, larangan apa yang pernah kalian alami? Mungkin di antara kalian pernah dilarang agar tidak pulang malam, dilarang agar jangan main terus, dsb. Mungkin juga kalian pernah melarang teman supaya tidak berbohong, supaya jangan terlambat, dsb. Pertanyaan saya, mengapa harus ada larangan? Tentu larangan itu demi kebaikan kalian semua, bukan?

The social function of prohibition is to get someone not to do something bad.

Task 1. Match the letter of the correct match to each problem.

Task 2. Write down the Indonesian meaning of the phrases of task 1 in the column below.

Task 3. Check your digital English dictionary to practice pronouncing the phrases correctly.

Task 4. Listen to the dialogue in the video to answer the questions below.

  1. What is the topic of the dialogue?
  2. Who came late?
  3. What did the boy promise?
  4. What is the relationship between the two speakers?
  5. What is the woman’s intention to say, “You must not come late any longer”?
  6. What did probably the boy do after the woman said that utterance?

Text Stucture

Pada saat seseorang melarang, apa yang harus kalian lakukan? Ya, sebaiknya kalian menanggapinya dengan menggunakan ungkapan yang tepat dengan santun dan melaksanakan apa yang menjadi larangan orang tersebut.

The text structure of prohibiting someone includes

  • Prohibiting someone by using expressions of prohibition.
  • Responding by using the correct expressions to accept or reject the prohibition.

Cobalah kalian simak kembali dialog pada video di atas untuk mengidentifikasi struktur dialog.

Task 5. Listen again more carefully to the dialogue in the video to answer the questions.

  1. What was happening to the boy?
  2. What did the woman say related to the boy”s late arrival at the class?
  3. What did the boy say to respond to the woman’s question?
  4. The woman said, “Don’t break your own promise” and the boy answered …………..,…………………………

Setelah menyimak kembali dialog di atas, ungkapan apa yang kalian bisa gunakan untuk menanggapi orang yang telah memberikan larangan?

Here are some expressions that you can use to respond to someone who prohibits you.

  • Alright.
  • Of course.
  • Yes, I won’t.
  • Okay.

Task 6. Listen again to the dialogue in the video to identify the text structure. Write down your answer in the following table.

Language Features

Jika kalian menyimak dengan seksama video di atas, maka kalian akan mendengarkan dua ungkapan larangan. What are they? Ya, benar. Berikut adalah dua contoh ungkapan larangan.

  1. You must not come late anylonger (Kamu jangan datang terlambat lagi.)
  2. Don’t break your own promise (Jangan melanggar janjimu sendiri.)

Kalau kalian memperhatikan frase yang dicetak tebal, maka kalian bisa menyimpulkan bahwa untuk mengungkapkan larangan kalian bisa mengggunakan dua cara, yaitu menggunakan must not dan kalimat larangan memggunakan don’t yang merupakam singkatan dari do not yang artinya jangan.

Selanjutnya kalian perhatikan struktur kalimatnya, ya. Coba perhatikan kalimat pertama, kata you (subject) diikuti must not lalu diikuti come (kata kerja bentuk pertama atau infinitive/Verb 1/ V1) lalu diikuti pelengkap (complement) yang terdiri dari late dan anylonger sebagai kata keterangan (adverb). Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa struktur kalimat pertama adalah Subject + must not + infinitive + complement.Jika kalian memperhatikan pola kalimat nomor doa, maka bisa kalian ketahui bahwa kalimat larangan dimulai dengan menggunakan kata Don’t dan diikuti break (sebagai kata kerja bentuk pertama/ infinitive) dan your promise (sebagai pelengkap/compliment). Jadi struktur kalimat larangan kedua adalah Don’t + infinitive + complement

The structures of expressions of prohibition are as follows.

  • Subject + must not + infinitive + complement.
  • Subject + must not + infinitive + complement.

Namun, bagaimana ya jika kalimat larangan tersebut tidak memiliki kata kerja seperti kalimat perintah berikut?

  • Jangan malas.
  • Jangan di sini.
  • Jangan menjadi anak nakal.

Dalam tiga kalimat di atas tidak terdapat kata kerja karena malas termasuk kata sifat (adjective), di sini termasuk kata keterangan tempat (adverb of place) dan anak nakal adalah kata benda (noun). Jika suatu kalimat larangan tidak terdapat kata kerja, maka setelah kata must not dan don’t harus diikuti kata be. Dengan demikian kalimat larangan di atas kalau dalam bahasa Inggris seperti berikut.

  1. You must not be lazy atau Don’t be lazy.
  2. You must not be here atau Don’t be here.
  3. You must not be a bad boy atau Don’t be a bad boy.

The structure of expressions of prohibition without verbs.

  1. Subject + must not + be + adjective/adverb/noun
  2. Don’t + be + adjective/adverb/noun

Task 7. Rearrange the following jumbled words into the correct sentences..

  1. must – lies- everybody – not – tell
  2. the – must – everywhere – school – throw – not -students – garbage
  3. should – postpone – not – be – we – what – must – doing – we
  4. not – to – parent – so – must – rudely – he – speak – his
  5. must – she – in – not – hurry – be – a

Task 8. Complete the following dialogue using the correct expressions.

(Situation: Meta and Rudi are watching television)

Meta: Oh, my God. The number of persons confirmed to be positively infected by covid 19 is more than 3.000 a day. What must we do?

Meta: But everywhere there are so many people in the crowd without wearing facemasks.

Task 9. Write your own dialogue based on the situation below. Practice the dialogue with a friend and take a video to submit it to your teacher.

Situation: you and your friend are talking about what students must not do related to how to actively take a part in developing the nation.
