Comparing the Language Features of Recount Texts (Membandingkan unsur kebahasaan teks recount)

Hello, eighth-graders. Happy to see you again. I hope everybody is okay.

Today, we are going to talk about the language feature of a recount text.

Please, pay attention to the following video for getting more understanding about it.

After watching the video, have you got the points? I hope so.

1. Use Simple Past Tense

Teks recount menggunakan past tense karena cerita dianggap terjadi pada waktu lampau. Pada umumnya, teks recount  menggunakan simple past tense. 

Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense berfungsi untuk menceritakan kejadian yang telah selesai di waktu lampau sehingga sekarang sudah tidak terjadi lagi.

Ciri utama simple past tense adalah menggunakan kata kerja bentuk lampau atau kedua yang sering disingkat V2 (Verb 2).

Struktur kalimat simple past tense dibedakan menjadi dua jenis, yaitu struktur kalimat yang memiliki kata kerja (Verbal Sentence) dan kalimat yang tidak memiliki kata kerja (Non-verbal sentence).

Berikut adalah pola kalimat verbal.

(+) S + V2 + (o) + (adv)

e.g. I  jumped into the pool.

(-) S + did not + V1 + (o) + (adv)

e.g. I did not have money.

Berikut adalah pola kalimat non-verbal.

(+) S + was/were + adj/adv/N

e.g. The beach was tranquil.

(+) S + was/were + not + adj/adv/N

e.g. The villagers were friendly.

Keterangan:

S = Subject (Subyek kalimat/ pelaku)

V2 = Verb 2 (past form verbs = kata kerja bentuk lampau), misalnya went, bet, bought, lived, watched.

O = object (Obyek kalimat/ yang dikenai pekerjaan)

adv = adverb (Kata keterangan: keterangan waktu, tempat, cara, tujuan)

did = kata kerja bantu (bentuk lampau dari do)  yang digunakan dalam kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya

adj = adjective (Kata sifat), misalnya beautiful, great, sad, tiring.

N = noun (Kata benda), misalnya beach, village, tree, house.

was = to be bentuk lampau yang berasal dari is dan am.

were = to be bentuk lampau yang berasal dari are.

2. Use Action Verbs

Kata kerja yang digunakan penulis, dapat berupa kata kerja yang menunjukkan suatu tindakan/ aktivitas yang disebut kata kerja tindakan (action verb) dalam bentuk lampau atau ke dua (Verb 2), misalnya drank, ran, went, lived, worked.

Contoh kalimat: I went to the beach with my family. There I saw many people playing water.

Kata kerja tindakan lampau dapat dibedakan menjadi dua jenis, yaitu kata beraturan (regular verbs)  dan tidak beraturan (irregular verb).

  • Regular verbs: Kata kerja bentuk lampau (Verb 2/ V2) berasal dari kata kerja bentuk pertama (V1) ditambah -d/ -ed, misalnya visited, walked, watched, worked.
  • Irregular verbs: Kata kerja bentuk lampau (Verb 2/ V2) yang memiliki bentuk tidak teratur, misalnya drank (V2) dari drink (V1), bought (V2) dari drink (V1), saw (V2) dari see (V1).

3. Use Adjectives

Teks narrative sering menggunakan kata sifat (adejctive) untuk  memperjelas obyek yang terkait dengan peristiwa atau setting tempat maupun waktu, misalnya great, cold, beautiful, quickly.

4. Use Time Connectives & Conjunctions

Time connective adalah jenis kata sambung (conjunction) yang berfungsi untuk menjelaskan kapan suatu kejadian sedang berlangsung. Sedangkan time conjuntion adalah kata yang digunakan untuk menghubungkan kata untuk membentuk satu kalimat padu milalnya and, or but. Before, after, as, when, while, until, since, although, if, because adalah conjunction yang sering digunakan dalam teks recount.

3. Use Adverbs

Sedangkan kata keterangan (adverb) yang sering dipakai dalam teks recount adalah keterangan time/ waktu (milsanya, yesterday, last week, two years ago), place/ tempat (misalnya, a zoo, at the beach, ), manner/ cara (misalnya, quickly, silently, hurriedly) dan purpose/ tujuan (to buy some food), degree (almost, completely),

Referensi gramatika

  • What does the underlined word refer to?
  • The underlined word refers to ….

Kata sambung

  • The old woman had not eaten for two days …. she was in hunger.
  • She lived in a poverty …. she did not want to be a beggar.

Now, it is time to practice. Please, do the following tasks.

Task 1. Read the following texts to answer the questions.

A Trip to the Zoo

Yesterday I went to the zoo. I went with my mum and dad. We went there by car. We took an hour to arrive at the zoo.

When we got there, we went to the shop. At the shop, I bought some food for the animals. After getting the food we went to the giraffe house. I fed the giraffes some leaves. They ate greedily.

Before having lunch we went for a ride on an elephant. It felt amazing. After lunch, we fed some birds in the park.

At the end of the day, we went home. I was really tired but it had been a great day.

  1. “We went there by car. “

What does “we” refer to?

2. “They ate greedily.”

The word ‘they’ refers to ….

3. Complete the following sentence using the correct word.

We went for a ride on an elephant …. having lunch.

Task 2. Read the texts to identify the language features of the texts. Write down your answer in the table provided. 

Text 1

SNOW DAY

It was a cold morning in the middle of Winter when I woke up and looked out the window. I rubbed my eyes and as I started to wake up, I saw that the ground was covered in snow. Light, fluffy snowflakes were floating in the sky, twirling and dancing before landing gently on the ground.

I leaped out of my bed and got dressed as fast as I could before running down, the hall and out the front door. As the cold air hit my body, I discovered that I had forgotten my Winter clothes. I quickly ran back inside and pulled on my mittens, hat, scarf, and jacket before returning outside. I had been looking forward to this day for so long.

The first thing I wanted to do was build a snowman. I still felt cold, but I didn’t care. I created an enormous snowman with rocks for eyes and a carrot for the nose. Just as I was putting the finishing touches on my snowman, I felt something cold thump against my head. A snowball! I turned around and saw my silly brother.

We continued our snowball fight long into the afternoon before finally heading inside for hot chocolates. I love the snow!

Text 2

My Birthday Disaster

I remember my disastrous birthday like it was just yesterday. It was my 13th birthday and I was so excited about my big party. My family and I had spent the whole week preparing the decorations and creating invitations. My mother had spent all morning baking an enormous chocolate cake and it looked absolutely delicious.

All my friends started to arrive after lunch-time, and everyone was playing happily outside the backyard. The clown was standing in front of the cake making balloon animals for all of us when disaster struck. One of my balloons burst with a loud bang.

The noise startled my cat, Lenny, who leaped into the air and bolted straight the cake. It was like a hippopotamus jumping into a muddy river. Brown chocolate cake flew all over the place, completely covering everyone at my party. Everyone was silent. No one knew what to say or do. I remember hearing a quiet giggle come from the group, then another and another.

Before long, the entire party was completely in stitches, laughing and laughing. We spent the rest of the afternoon licking the chocolate mixture off our clothing and laughing about the time the cat jumped on the cake.

Although the day didn’t go exactly as I expected it to, I had a lot of fun at my crazy birthday party and I know that I will never forget that day.
