Asking for and Giving Suggestion (Contoh Ungkapan dan Dialog Meminta dan Memberi Saran)

Hello, eight graders. How’s it going today? I hope everyone is feeling great. This time we are still studying the same basic competence, i.e. 3.3 & 4.3 about asking for and giving suggestion.

Everybody must get problems. Sometimes we can’t find any solution by ourselves and we need some suggestions from others, don’t you? Tapi, kita harus ingat, saat meminta saran untuk menyelesaikan masalah harus dengan orang yang tepat, misalnya kepada orang yang dianggap lebih berwawasan luas, yang lebih kompeten supaya tidak salah ambil langkah. Apa jadinya jika kita sedang punya masalah dan meminta saran kepada orang yang salah? Tentu kita akan ambil jalan yang salah, bukan?

Purpose

Tujuan ungkapan suggestion adalah untuk memberikan saran agar seseorang melakukan tidak melakukan sesuatu.

Ask for suggestions from wise persons and you will find the right solution.

Baik, hari ini kita akan belajar bagaimana meminta saran dan memberikan saran dalam bahasa Inggris. Are you ready? In English, we can use some expressions to ask suggestions as follows. Berikut adalah ungkapan yang digunakan untuk meminta saran.

Here are some expressions to make or offer suggestions. Berikut ini adalah ungkapan untuk memberikan saran.

Pada umumnya, untuk memberikan saran, orang menggunakan kata should atau ought to yang artinya seharusnya/sebainya/seyogyanya.

Berikut pola kalimat atau struktur kalimat yang digunakan untuk memberikan saran menggunakan should atau ought to.

S + should/ought to + V1 + O + adv

Example

You should study hard.

S. Should. V1. Adv

Here are some expressions you can you to respond suggestions. Berikut adalah ungkapan untuk menanggapi saran. You can accept (anda bisa menerima saran)or reject (anda menolak saran) the suggestions.

How about an example of dialogue using expressions of suggestions? Please read and practice the dialogue below.

Task 1. Watch the video and write down what you have known and haven’t.

Task 2. Watch again the video and write down some questions related to the social function, generic structure and language features of expressions of suggestion that you don’t understand.

Task 3. Match the English words with the Indonesian ones.

Task 4. Listen to the dialogue in the video and answer the questions.

  1. What is the dialogue about?
  2. What is the man feeling?
  3. What does the woman offer to the man to relieve his pain?
  4. What does the man say to ask suggestion?
  5. What does the woman say to give suggestion?
  6. What does the man say to accept suggestion?
  7. What time does the dialogue possibly happen?
  8. What will the man probably do after accepting the woman’s suggestion?

Task 5. Listen again to the dialogue in the video and write down the expressions of asking, giving, and accepting suggestion.

Task 6. Arrange the jumbled sentences to make a meaningful dialogue.

  1. Dino: You should study hard, Tina.
  2. Dino: You’re welcome, Tina.
  3. Dino: It is good. I don’t think I get a perfect score. How about yours?
  4. Tina: I get a bad score. I didn’t study seriously last night. What should I do?
  5. Tina: Hi. How is your English test result?
  6. Tina: Yes, that’s right. Thank you.

Task 7. Complete the following dialogue using the correct expressions.

Ryan: Look. There are many people do not wear a mask in the crowd. ……………………………….. (1)

Lia: We should give a good example for them to wear a mask properly when we are in the crowd.

Lia: Look at the woman. She is eating food without washing hands first.

Task 8. Write down your suggestions if your friend gets the following problems.

1. Your friend is getting fever in the class

Task 9. Write down a dialogue using expressions of suggestions based on the situation below and act it out with a partner.

Situation: Your classmate invites you to come to her birthday party but you have not finished the assignment to be handed tomorrow. You ask your brother’s or sister’s suggestion and you don’t accept her/his suggestion. Then you ask another suggestion and you finally accept the suggestion.
