Degree of Comparison (Perbandingan Kata Sifat)

Hello, learners. How’s everything? Semua sehat, ya? Dan harus tetap semangat untuk belajar. Kali ini kamu akan belajar tentang perbandingan kata sifat (adjective).

Pernahkan kamu membandingkan tinggi badan kamu dengan temanmu? Apakah kamu sama tingginya? Atau kamu lebih tinggi? Atau bahkan kamu yang paling tinggi di antara kawan-kawanmu? Nah, ketika kamu membandingkan tinggi badanmu dengan teman-temanmu, inilah yang disebut sebagai perbandingan kata sifat (degree of comparison).

Dalam bahasa Inggris, ada tiga tingkat perbandingan, yaitu perbandingan tingkat sama (equal degree), tingkat lebih (comparative degree), dan tingkat paling (superlative degree).

1. Equal Degree (Tingkat Sama)

Perbandingan tingkat sama misalnya ketika kamu memiliki tinggi 150cm dan temanmu tingginya juga 150cm. Ketika kamu dan temanmu memiliki tinggi badan yang sama, maka perbandingan yang kamu lakukan termasuk perbandingan tingkat sama (equal degree).

Untuk mengungkapkan perbandingan tingkat sama, kamu dapat menggunakan frase berikut

as + adjective + as (as + adj + as)

sama …. dengan …

Berikut adalah contoh kalimatnya.

  • I am as big as my sister (Aku sama besarnya dengan kakak)
  • He is as handsome as his father (Dia sama tampannya dengan ayahnya/ dia setampan ayahnya)
  • They are as strong as us.

Note*

Jangan lupa untuk kalimat perbandingan harus menggunakan “to be“, yaitu is, am, are. “To be” digunakan setelah subyek. Penggunaan “to be” harus sesuai dengan subyeknya.

  • Jika subyeknya “he, she, it” maka menggunakan to be “is“
  • Jika subyeknya “I” maka menggunakan to be “am“
  • Jika subyeknya “they, we, you” maka menggunakan to be “are“

2. Comparative Degree (Tingkat Lebih)

Perbandingan tingkat lebih misalnya ketika kamu memiliki tinggi 150cm dan temanmu tingginya 160cm. Dengan demikian kamu memiliki tubuh yang lebih pendek daripada temanmu. Ketika kamu memiliki tinggi badan yang pendek daripada temanmu , maka perbandingan yang kamu lakukan termasuk perbandingan tingkat lebih (comparative degree).

Untuk mengungkapkan perbandingan tingkat lebih, kamu dapat menggunakan dua cara, yaitu:

  • Dengan menambahkan r/er pada kata sifat (adj+r/er) dan diikuti “than” untuk kata sifat (adjective) yang memiliki 1 atau 2 suku kata (syllable), misalnya big (besar) menjadi bigger (lebih besar), small (kecil) menjadi smaller (lebih kecil).
  • Dengan menambahkan more sebelum kata sifat (adj) dan diikuti “than” untuk kata sifat (adjective) yang memiliki 2 suku kata (syllable) atau lebih, misalnya handsome (tampan) menjadi more handsome (lebih tampan), expensive (mahal) menjadi more expensive (lebih mahal).

3. Superlative Degree (Tingkat Paling)

Perbandingan tingkat paling misalnya ketika kamu memiliki tinggi 150cm dan temanmu tingginya di atas 150cm. Dengan demikian kamu memiliki tubuh yang paling pendek di antara temanmu. Ketika kamu memiliki tinggi badan yang paling pendek di antara temanmu , maka perbandingan yang kamu lakukan termasuk perbandingan tingkat paling (superlative degree).

Untuk mengungkapkan perbandingan tingkat paling, kamu dapat menggunakan dua cara, yaitu:

  • Dengan menambahkan the sebelum kata sifat dan menambahkan st/est pada kata sifat (adj+st/est) untuk kata sifat (adjective) yang memiliki 1 atau 2 suku kata (syllable), misalnya big (besar) menjadi the biggest (paling besar), small (kecil) menjadi the smallest (paling kecil).
  • Dengan menambahkan the most sebelum kata sifat (adj) untuk kata sifat (adjective) yang memiliki 2 suku kata (syllable)

Maam, this is me, Abi Zar Hibban, I used to be your student in junior high school. I want to thank you SO MUCH for making me more confident with my English. Back then in junior high, you asked me to participate in a storytelling competition, and I got second place in that competition. That experience was a huge deal for me. It made me realize how much I could’ve done if I were braver. Since that moment, I always try to encourage myself to try new things.

    And last year, I became the leader of the English debate club in my high school and participated in the NSDC English debate competition. Even though I lost in the province elimination, I’m still really proud of myself for enduring one of the most challenging debate competitions that ever existed.

    If you didn’t ask me to participate in that storytelling competition or encourage me the way you did, I would not have the courage and confidence that I have right now.
