Expressions of Wish, Hope, and Congratulation (Contoh Ungkapan dan Dialog Doa, Harapan, dan Selamat)

Hello, ninth Graders. Howdy? I hope you are okay. At this moment you are going to learn about expressing wish, hope and congratulation. Are you ready to learn together? I hope so.

Dalam keseharian, saya yakin kalian sering mengucapkan doa (wish) dan harapan (hope). Saya juga percaya kalian pernah memberikan ucapan selamat (congratulation) kepada teman yang merayakan sesuatu atau mendapatkan kebahagiaan (happiness/fortune) atau kesuksesan/prestasi (success/achievement). Untuk apa kalian melakukannya?

Coba kalian ingat-ingat bagaimana perasaan kalian ketika ada orang yang mengucapkan doa dan harapan baik untuk kalian. Selain itu, apa yang kamu rasakan jika kamu mendapatkan kebahagiaan, misalnya mendapat kejuaraan suatu lomba dan ada orang lain mengucapkan selamat untuk kalian? Saya yakin kalian pasti merasa senang, bukan? Sebaliknya apa yang kalian rasakan saat berulang tahun dan tidak ada satu kawan pun yang mengucapkan selamat ulang tahun kepada kalian? So pasti kalian sedih banget, kan?

Dengan demikian dapat kalian ketahui bahwa betapa pentingnya mengucapkan doa, harapan dan selamat untuk orang lain. Ucapan doa, harapan dan selamat yang diberikan akan membuat orang lain merasa diperhatikan dan merasa bahagia. Ternyata mudah, ya, membuat orang lain bahagia. Jadi, jangan pelit mengucapkan doa, harapan dan selamat kepada orang lain.

Making others happy is road to happiness.

Dengan mengucapkan doa, harapan dan selamat kepada orang lain juga dapat menjaga hubungan baik dengan orang lain.

The social function of expressing wish, hope and congratulation to others is to maintain good relationship among others.

Selanjutnya, kapan kita sebaiknya mengucapkan doa, harapan dan selamat?

Expressions of wish is given to someone to be better in the future. (Ungkapan wish digunakan ketika ingin menyampaikan doa baik untuk diri sendiri atau orang lain agar ke depannya lebih baik).

Examples of expressing wish:

  1. I wish you Merry Christmast.
  2. Wish you all the best.

Expressions of hope is given to someone to be successful. (Ungkapan harapan digunakan ketika ingin menyampaikan harapan untuk diri sendiri atau orang lan agar berhasil/sukses)

Examples of expressing hopes:

  1. I hope you get well soon.
  2. I hope you get well really soon.

Congratulation is usually used in the following situations.

  1. Someone gets an achievement/success, e.g. winning a contest, , getting a job promotion, etc (seseorang mendapatkan prestasi/kesuksesan, seperti menang lomba, naik jabatan, dsb)
  2. Someone gets happiness, e.g graduating from school, having a new house, giving a birth, etc (seseorang mendapatkan kebahagiaan, seperti lulus sekolah, memiliki rumah baru, kelahiran bayi, dsb)
  3. Someone celebrates something, e.g. birthday, anniversary, special days, etc (seseorang yang merayakan sesuatu, misalnya ulang tahun, perayaan, hari khusus, dsb).

Examples of expressing congratulation

  1. Congratulations for you success.
  2. Congrats for your graduation.

Supaya kalian lebih paham tentang ungkapan doa, harapan dan selamat, kalian kerjakan task berikut.

Task 1. Find the 10 hidden words related to wish, hope and congratulation.

Task 2. Write down the Indonesian meaning of the words you have found in the grid of task 1.

Task 3. Listen to the dialogue in the video to answer the questions.

  1. What are the two speakers talking about?
  2. Who has graduated from university?
  3. Why does the boy say “Congratulation”?.
  4. What is the boy’s purpose to say ‘I wish you luck,’?
  5. What is the boy’s purpose to say ‘I hope you will get a good job soon.”?

Sebelum lanjut latihan berikutnya, kalian simak terlebih dahulu isi video di atas. Dalam video tersebut terdapat seorang laki-laki yang memulai pembicaraan. Apa yang diucapkan laki-laki tersebut? Laki-laki tersebut mengucapkan, “I heard that you have graduated from university.” (Aku dengar kamu telah lulus kuliah?” Kemudian laki-laki tersebut mengucapkan selamat (congratulation) atas kelulusan wanita tersebut. Ia mengatakan, “Congratulation!” (Selamat!). Lalu laki-laki tersebut mengungkapkan harapannya (hope) kepada wanita tersebut. Ia berkata, “I hope you will get a good job.” (Aku berharap kamu mendapatkan pekerjaan yang bagus). Lalu wanita tersebut menjawab, “Thanks.I want to run my family bussiness.” (Terima kasih. Saya ingin menjalankan usaha keluarga). Laki-laki tersebut menanggapinya dengan mengucapkan doa (wish). Ia berkata, “I wish you luck.” (Semoga kamu sukses.) dan perempuan itu menjawab, “Thank you.”

Dari pembahasan di atas bisa kalian simpulkan bahwa untuk mengungkapkan doa kalian bisa menggunakan kata wish yang artinya berdoa/berharap. Sedangkan untuk mengungkapkan harapan kalian bisa menggunakan kata hope yang artinya berharap. Untuk mengucapkan selamat, kalian bisa menggunakan kata congratulation yang artinya selamat.

So far, I hope you get what you have learnt. Now, let’s study about the expressions of wish, hope and congratulation. In addition, you will learn about how to respond. Selanjutnya kalian akan belajar ungkapan yang digunakan untuk menyampaikan doa, harapan dan selamat.

Here are some expressions used to express wish.

  1. I wish you luck. (Saya berharap kamu sukses.)
  2. Wish me luck. (Doakan saya sukses.)
  3. I wish you all the best. (Saya doakan semua yang terbaik untukmu.)
  4. Good luck. (Semoga sukses.)
  5. I wish to win the speech contest. (Semoga aku menang lomba pidato.)
  6. Wishing you all of the love and happiness in the world as you settle in to your new house. (Semoga dipenuhi cinta dan kebahagiaan di rumah baru.)

Perhatikan pola kalimat yang menggunakan wish di atas supaya kalian dapat menggunakan kata wish dengan struktur kalimat yang benar. Jika diperhatikan dari kalimat nomor 1, 2, dan 3 wish diikuti kata benda atau noun (Yaitu you dan me). Sedangkan untuk nomor 5, setelah wish diikuti to infinitive yaitu to win. Dengan demikian, pola kalimat menggunakan wish adalah sebagai berikut.

Sentence structure uses wish.

  1. wish + noun
  2. wish + to infinitive

Kata wish dalam bahasa Inggris selain digunakan untuk mengungkapkan doa juga digunakan untuk mengungkapkan harapan yang tidak mungkin terjadi. Sebagai contoh, harapan bisa terbang adalah harapan yang tidak mungkin terjadi. Namun, yang harus diperhatikan ketika menggunakan kata wish untuk mengungkapkan harapan yang tidak mungkin terjadi setelah harus menggunakan kata dalam bentuk past atau lampau. Perhatikan contoh harapan yang tidak mungkin terjadi seperti berikut.

  1. I wish I could fly.
  2. I wish I came to your birthday party yesterday.

Perhatikan kata could pada kalimat nomor 1 adalah bentuk past dari can. Kalimat ini menggunakan could karena harapan bisa terbang tidak mungkin terjadi. Sedangkan kalimat nomor 2 terdapat kata kerja came. Came adalah bentuk lampau atau past dari kata come. Kalimat ini menggunakan kata came karena subyek kalimat berharap sesuatu yang tidak mungkin terjadi karena peristiwanya sudah terlanjur lewat. I (saya) sudah tidak mungkin hadir (came) dalam pesta ulang tahun (birthday party) karena sudah terjadi kemarin (yesterday).

Here are some expressions used to express hope.

  1. I hope to be a successful businessman. (Saya berharap menjadi seorang pengusaha sukses.)
  2. I hope to succeed in the future. (Saya berharap sukses di masa depan)
  3. I hope you will get well really soon. (Saya berharap kamu lekas sembuh.)
  4. I hope that my parents will always be happy. (Saya berharap agar orang tuaku selalu bahagia.)

Perhatikan kalimat nomor 1. Setelah hope diikuti to be dan diikuti a successful businessman (sebagai kata benda atau noun). Untuk nomor 1 setelah to be dapat diikuti kata sifat (adjective) misalnya successful atau kata keterangan (adverb) misalnya here, on time, dsb.

Sedangkan untuk nomor 2 kata hope diikuti to dan succeed (sebagai kata kerja atau verb). Setelah verb dapat diikuti object dan adverb.

Sedangkan untuk nomor 3 setelah hope diikuti you (sebagai subject), will dan get (sebagai kata kerja atau verb). Setelah verb dapat diikuti object dan adverb.

Untuk nomor 4 kata hope dikuti that lalu diikuti my parents (sebagai subject), will, be, dan happy (sebagai kata sifat atau adjective). That sebagai kata hubung boleh ada atau boleh tidak ada.

Dari contoh ungkapan hope di atas, dapat kita simpulkan bahwa hope memiliki dua pola kalimat sebagai berikut.

Sentence structure uses hope.

  1. hope + to infinitive
  2. hope + to be
  3. hope + (that) + Subject + Verb + (Object)
  4. hope + (that) + subject + to be + adjective/adverb/noun

Here are some expressions used to congratulate someone who gets an achievement or success.

  1. Congratulations! (Selamat!)
  2. Congratulation on winning the contest! (Selamat atas kemenangannya dalam lomba.)
  3. Congratulation for your graduation! (Selamat atas kelulusannya.)
  4. Congratulation to you! (Selamat untukmu)
  5. I’d like to congratulate you for your graduation.(Saya ingin mengucapkan selamat atas kelulusannya.)
  6. Congratulation on your move and cheers to all that is to come! (Selamat menempati rumah baru dan semoga bahagia).
  7. Congratulation! Best wishes to the both of you. (Selamat. Doa terbaik untuk kalian berdua.)
  8. Warmest congratulations on the birth of your sweet baby girl! (Selamat atas kelahiran bayi perempuan anda yang cantik.)

Perhatikan contoh ungkapan selamat di atas. Untuk nomor 1 kita bisa menggunakan kata congratulations saja tanpa dikuti kata lain untuk mengucapkan selamat.

Sedangkan untuk nomor 2 setelah congratulation diikuti on. Setelah on diikuti kata kerja (verb) bentuk pertama dan diberi imbuhan -ing yang biasa disingkat V1+ing. Setelah V1+ing diikuti the contest sebagai object kalimat. Perlu diperhatikan juga bahwa congratulation on diikuti peristiwa kebahagiaan.

Untuk nomor 3 setelah congratulation diikuti for dan your graduation sebagai kata benda atau noun. Perlu diperhatikan juga bahwa congratulation for diikuti pencapaiannya/ prestasinya.

Untuk nomor 4, congratulation to diikuti you sebagai noun. Jadi, congratulation to diikuti orang (person) yang diberi ucapan selamat. Untuk nomor berikutnya, coba kalian amati sendiri, ya dan berlatihlah membuat kalimat sendiri sesuai konteks situasi menggunakan pola kalimat di atas.

Sentence structure uses congratulation

  1. congratulation + on + V1-ing + object
  2. congratulation + for + noun (achievement)
  3. congratulation + to + noun (person)

Here are some expressions used to congratulate someone who celebrates something.

  1. Happy birthday. (Selamat ulang tahun.)
  2. Happy anniversary Republic of Indonesia. (Selamat ulang tahun Republik Indonesia.)
  3. Happy new year. (Selamat tahun baru.)
  4. Happy Eid Al-Fitr. (Selamat Idul Fitri).
  5. Happy wedding. (Selamat menikah.)
  6. Merry Christmas. (Selamat Natal)

I hope you get what I mean. Alright, let’s go on the next discussion.

Task 4. Watch the following video to answer the questions.

  1. What is the video about?
  2. What does the girl celebrate?
  3. What does the boy give to the girl?
  4. What is the boy’s purpose to say “Happy birthday”?
  5. What does the girl probably feel after the boy says, “Happy birthday!’?

Mari kita bahas bersama-sama ya mengenai isi video yang barusan kalian lihat. Pertama, video tersebut tentang seseorang yang merayakan ulang tahun dan mendapatkan ucapan selamat ulang tahun dari temannya. Dari mana kalian tahu hal tersebut? Pertama, saat laki-laki tersebut mengucapkan “Happy birthday!” yang artinya selamat ulang tahun. Lalu laki-laki tersebut memberikan badiah ulang tahun sambil berkata, “Here is for you.” (Ini untukmu.) Jawaban apa yang kalian dengar dari perempuan tersebut? Benar, perempuan itu berkata, “Thank you.”

Dari video di atas bisa kita simpulkan bahwa ketika ada seseorang mengucapkan doa, harapan dan selamat atas kebahagiaan, prestasi atau perayaan, kalian bisa memberikan jawaban dengan menggunakan berbagai ungkapan terima kasih, seperti thank you. Ungkapan terima kasih telah kalian pelajari di kelas VII, bukan. Saya harap.kalian masih ingat materi tersebut. Kalau sudah lupa, kalian bisa membaca kembali melalui link berikut.
