Hello, Guys. See you again at this moment. Our topic today is about labels of food and drink. Nah, tentu kalian sudah pernah lihat label makanan/minuman, bukan? By the way, saya penasaran, nih. Apakah kalian selama ini selalu memperhatikan label makanan atau minuman sebelum mengkonsumsinya atau membeli suatu produk makanan? Jangan-jangan, asal comot aja, tuh makanan/ minuman. Eh, kok malah jadi negative thinking.

Baiklah, kita lanjutkan, ya. Bagi sebagian orang mungkin memperhatikan label makanan / minuman itu tidak penting. Kalau sudah suka ya beli saja atau makan/ minum saja sampai habis. Tidak peduli apakah makanan/ minuman itu sehat atau tidak. Tapi, bagi sebagian orang lainnya yang sadar akan kesehatan pasti akan memperhatikan label makanan/ minuman sebelum mereka membeli atau memgkonsumsinya. Nah, pertanyaannya, bagian apa saja ya mereka perhatikan dan untuk apa mereka melakukannya? Let’s check it out.

Definition

Label adalah selembar kertas atau plastik yang tertera pada sebuah obyek atau benda, misalnya bungkus makanan, botol minuman, bungkus obat, dll. (A label is a piece of paper or plastic that is attached to an object in order to give information about it.) Label makanan/minuman berarti label yang tertera pada bungkus makanan/minuman.

Purpose

Tujuan dari label adalah untuk memberikan informasi mengenai produk, misalnya produk berupa makanan, minuman, obat, pakaian, dll. (The purpose of a label is to give information about the product. Fungsi dari label makanan/minuman adalah untuk memberikan informasi terkait produk makanan/minuman tersebut.

Parts of Food Label

(Generic Structure & Language Features)

Ketika kita membeli makanan sebaiknya memperhatikan bagian dari label makanan seperti berikut untuk mendapatkan informasi lengkap mengenai produk tersebut yang pastinya akan memberikan banyak manfaat kesehatan untuk kita.

Parts of food label

  1. Date Marking. Date marking sering juga disebut sebagai expired date (kadang disingkat exp. date). Date marking atau tanggal kedaluwarsa memberikan informasi terkait batas waktu maksimal makanan itu boleh dikonsumsi. Frase yang sering digunakan untuk menunjukkan tanggal kedaluwarsa adalah Best before, Use by, Sell By, Best Use Before, Best If Used By, Expired date, Exp. Date,
  2. Product Name. Nama produk biasanya ditemukan di samping nama brand atau merk produk. Nama produk berisi informasi tentang jenis makanan, misalnya pada gambar label minuman di atas produk minuman tersebut adalah sejenis minuman susu kedelai segar yang dipasteurisasi atau disterilisasi (Pasteurized Fresh Soya Milk)
  3. Net Weight. Berat bersih menunjukkan berat asli makanan/minuman tanpa bungkusnya. Jika makanan dalam bentuk likuid atau cair, berat bersih menunjukkan jumlah dalam bentuk keringnya. Pada contoh label ini net weight-nya sebesar 100ml.
  4. Ingredients List. Daftar kandungan menunjukkan bahan apa saja yang digunakan untuk membuat makanan atau minuman tersebut. Bahan-bahan tersebut dituliskan dengan urutan dari yang paling banyak ke yang paling sedikit kandungannya. Jadi tiga kandungan yang berada paling atas adalah kandungan terbanyak yang digunakan sebagai bahan membuat makana/minuman tersebut. Jika tiga kandungan yang berada di atas adalah refined grain , a type of sugar, or hydrogenated oils maka makanan ini tidak sehat (unhealthy food).
  5. Nutrition Information. Informasi nilai gizi (nutrition information/ nutrioin facts) menunjukkan jumlah gizi (Nutrition) dalam setiap sajian (serving). Frase lain yang juga digunakan untuk informasi nilai gizi adalah serving size (takaran saji), serving per package (jumlah sajian per kemasan). amount per serving (Jumlah per sajian), dsb.
  6. Usage Instruction. Cara penggunaan berisi informasi terkait bagaimana menyimpan (store/ storing) atau menggunakan (use/using) produk tersebut. Istilah lain yang juga sering ditemukan pada label makan adalah cooking instruction (cara memasak)
  7. Manufacturer’s Detail. Setiap label mencantumkan nama dan alamat pembuatnya (manufacturer), importir (importer) atau distributornya.

Dari tujuh bagian label makanan/minuman, sepertinya ada satu bagian yang peru kita ulik lebih dalam lagi. Yang mana, ya?

Kita coba bahas lebih dalam tentang nutritious facts. Mengapa bagian informasi nilai gizi perlu dibahas lebih dalam lagi? Karena banyak yang belum bisa memahami maksud dari informasi tersebut..Let’s see.

Ada lima hal yang penting untuk diketahui terkait informasi nilai gizi sehingga bisa membantu kita hidup lebih sehat. Ingat, ya, bahwa informasi gizi yang tertera dalam label makanan/minuman adalah nilai gizi yang terkandung dalam setiap porsi yang dibutuhkan per harinya (Daily Value/DV atau dalam bahasa Indonesianya adalah Angka Kecukupan Gizi/ AKG). Misalnya pada label tersebut tertera Dietary fiber sebesar 14% berarti dalam setiap porsi kebutuhan serat baru terpenuhi 14% dan tubuh kita membutuhkan 86% lagi per harinya. Baik, untuk lebih jelasnya kita bahas satu per satu, ya.

  1. Serving Size atau takaran saji, Pada label tersebut tertera takaran saji sebesar 2/3 cangkir atau sebanyak 55g.
  2. Serving per container. Pada label tersebut takaran saji per bungkusnya adalah sebanyak 8 porsi (8 servings). Jika kita mengkonsumsi satu kemasan tersebut berarti kita telah mengkonsumsi 8 kali jumlah kalori (amount of calorie), karbohidrat, lemak, dll seperti yang tertera di label.
  3. Total Carbohydrates menunjukkan jenis karbohidrat yang terkandung dalam makanan/ minuman, termasuk gula (sugar) dan serat (fiber).
  4. Nutrients. Nutrisi yang bagus untuk kesehatan dan perbanyaklah mengkonsumsi ini (fiber, vitamins, minerals)
  5. Calorie. Pada label di atas jumlah kalori atau energi per porsi (amount per serving calories) sebesar 230 kkal. Pada label terebut juga tertera takaran saji sebesar 8 porsi untuk satu kemasan (8 serving per container. Artinya, jumlah kalori dalam satu porsi sebesar 230, tetapi jika dalam satu kemasan berarti kalori yang terkandung di dalam minuman tersebut sebesar 8 X 320 = 1840. Perlu diketahui jumlah energi yang dibutuhkan manusia adalah sebesar 2000 kkal setiap harinya. Jika mengkonsumsi makanan lebih dari 2000 kalori orang akan cenderung naik BB dan jika kurang dari 2000 kalori akan turun BB.

Remember.

Eat more foods with higher vitamins, minerals (e.g. calcium and iron), and fiber.

Eat fewer foods with higher sugar, saturated fat, salt, and trans fat.

Nah, sejauh ini kalian sudah paham, ya, apa itu label? Label adalah kertas atau plastik yang tertera pada kemasan suatu produk yang bertujuan untuk memberikan informasi tentang produk tersebut (Label is a piece of paper or plastic which is attached on a package of a product to give information about the product). Umumnya label makanan atau minuman memberikan informasi terkait dengan date marking, product name, net weight, ingredient list, nutrition information, usage instruction, dan manufactirer’s detail. Tentunya dengan memperhatikan label makanan atau minuman kita akan mendapatkan informasi penting yang sangat bermanfaat untuk menjaga kesehatan kita.
