Do dan does adalah kata kerja bantu (KKB) yang digunakan dalam kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya.

Do dan does digunakan untuk membuat Kalimat pernyataan negatif dan kalimat tanya terkait dengan hal berikut.

  1. Rutinitas atau kebiasaan sekarang.
  2. Fakta sekarang.
  3. Kebenaran umum (pernyataan umum yang tidak dapat dibantah kebenarannya).

Negative Sentence

Kalimat negatif adalah kalimat yang memiliki makna “tidak”. Pola kalimat yang digunakan untuk membuat kalimat negatif adalah sebagai berikut.

S + do/does + not + V1 + O + adv.

S = subject (subyek kalimat)

do/ does = kata kerja bantu (KKB)

V 1 = verb 1 (kata kerja bentuk pertama atau kata kerja waktu sekarang)

O = object (obyek kalimat). Object dalam kalimat adalah pilihan, artinya boleh ada atau tidak ada dalam kalimat.)

Adv = adverb (kata keterangan, misalnya kata keterangan tempat, waktu, cara, tujuan, alasan, dsb. Adverb dalam kalimat adalah pilihan, artinya boleh ada atau tidak ada dalam kalimat.)

Kalian harus tahu apa singkatan do not dan does not.

  • Does not disingkat doesn’t.
  1. I do not drink a glass of milk in the morning.
  2. My mother does not always cook in the evening.

Pada kalimat no 1 menggunakan KKB do karena subyek kalimatnya adalah I. Sedangkan kalimat no 2 menggunakan KKB does karena subyek kalimatnya adalah my mother dan my mother kata gantinya adalah sebagai she (she menunjukkan satu orang berjenis kelamin perempuan).

Interrogative Sentences

Kalimat introgatif adalah kalimat tanya. Kalimat tanya yang menanyakan rutinitas sekarang, fakta sekarang dan kebenaran umum menggunakan kata kerja bantu do atau does. Terdapat dua jenis pertanyaan utama, yaitu kata tanya tertutup yaitu pertanyaan yang jawabannya “ya” atau “tidak” dan kalimat tanya terbuka, yaitu kalimat tanya yang menggunakan kata tanya 4wh/ h yang meliputi kata tanya berikut.

  1. Who (siapa), menanyakan subyek kalimat orang.
  2. Whom (siapa), menanyakan obyek kalimat orang.
  3. What (apa), menanyakan subyek atau obyek kalimat tetapi bukan manusia.
  4. When (kapan): menanyakan keterangan waktu kejadian (adverb of time)
  5. Where (di/ ke mana): menanyakan keyersngan tempat kejadian (adverb of place)
  6. Why (mengapa): menanyakan keterangan alasan (adverb of reason)
  7. How (Bagaimana): menanyakan keterangan cara melakukan sesuatu (adverb of manner)

Sekarang kit coba perhatikan pola kalimat dan contoh kalimat tanya tertutup (Yes/ No- questions) berikut ya.

Yes/ No – Questions (Pertanyaan yang jawabannya ya atau tidak)

Do/ does + S + V1 + O + adv + ?

  • Do you drink a glass of milk every morning? (Apakah kamu minum segelas susu setiap pagi?)
  • Does your nother always cook for dinner every afternoon? (Apakah ibumu selalu masak untuk makan malam setiap sore?)

Jawaban kedua pertanyaan di atas adalah sebagai berikut.

  1. Pertanyaan no 1: jika jawabannya iya, maka dijawab “Yes, I do” yang artinya “Ya”. Jika jawabanny tidak mak dijawab “No, I don’t.” yang artinya “Tidak.”.
  2. Pertanyaan no 2: jika jawabannya iya, maka dijawab “Yes, she does” yang artinya “Ya”. Jika jawabanny tidak mak dijawab “No, She doesn’t.” yang artinya “Tidak.”.

Open ended questions

Sekarang kita akan belajar bagaimana membuat pertanyaan dengan menggunakan kata tanya wh/h. Caranya mudah. Sangat mudah. Nggak percaya? Tambahkan saja wh/h-question di awal kalimat tanya sebelum do/does. Simple, kan?

Wh/h-Q+ do/ does + S + V1 + O + adv + ?

Pay attention to the following examples. Perhatikan contoh kalimat tanya terbuka (open ended questions) menggunakan eh/h-question berikut.

  1. What do you drink every morning? (apa yang kamu minum setiap pagi?
  2. Where does your father work? (Di mana ayahmu bekerja?)
  3. Why do they do sport every morning? (Mengapa mereka olah raga setiap pagi?)
  4. How does your sister go to school? (Bagaimana saudaramu berangkat ke sekolah?)

Task 1. Write down the English word of the following activities

Task 2. Complete the following sentence using “do” or “does“.

  1. We ….. not go to school on Sunday.
  2. My parents …. not go to work on Saturday and Sunday.
  3. My father and I …. not do exercise every week.
  4. …. you live in a city?
  5. ….. the sun rise form east?

Task 3. Write the sentences below into negative and interrogative ones.

  1. My sister studies everyday.
  2. My English teacher teaches us every Thursday.
  3. Tito always takes his dog walk every morning on holidays.
  4. The cats often sleep in my bedroom.
  5. The plants need more water to grow.

Task 4. Write a negative and interrogative sentence for each picture. Write down the answer too.
